Hjulsta Exchange E18/E4

Hjulsta Exchange E18/E4

Bridge engineering

The Hjulsta Exchange E18/E4 project involves widening an approximately 3km-long section of the E18 motorway between the Jakobsberg and Hjulsta interchanges in Stockholm. The project involves reconstruction and expansion of existing interchanges. Among other things, new slip roads will be built between the E18 and E4 motorways.

One of the elements of the project is the widening of the existing bridge structure (54N) at the Hjuslta interchange to enable the construction of a new slip road between new E4 motorway section and the existing E18 motorway.

The existing bridge structure 54N is a twelve-span continuous structure made of prestressed concrete with a total length of 633 m.

The cross-section of the structure was made as a single-chamber box-section with a total width of 15.15 m.

Due to the planned slip road between supports 7-13 (70-130), it is required to widen the bridge structure on the eastern side. Required widening size 0.00 – 10.75 m. The scale of the expansion of the bridge requires the construction of an additional structure with supports and its connection to the existing object. For this purpose, a new structure was designed as a seven-span continuous beam made of prestressed concrete, 266 m long. The cross-section featured a T-section with variable width adapted to the curvature of the designed slip road.

Stockholm E4 bypass is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Swedish history and is scheduled for completion in 2026.
